Wilco Electronic Systems, Inc.
began operations in May, 1977, and is now the largest
privately owned African-American cable provider in the
Philadelphia area. During the first three years of Wilco’s
history, the company concentrated its efforts in the
installation and service of Master Antenna Systems, Closed
Circuit Television, and Security and Intercom Systems.
Offering just 3 channels and a better picture quality than
an antenna could provide, Wilco Electronic Systems, Inc.
quickly became a new company on the rise in the nascent
cable industry in Philadelphia. In 1980, Wilco was granted a
franchise by Home Box Office (“HBO”), the nation’s leading
pay television service, to market is programming to
multi-dwelling unit buildings (“MDU’s”). This was the first
time that such a franchise was granted to a minority owned
firm in the Eastern United States. It was this franchise
which opened the door for Wilco’s entry into the cable
television industry.
Today, Wilco has become a leader and an anomaly among
independent cable operators in the telecommunications
industry. The Company continues to grow and expand its
subscriber base by providing low cost cable services,
entertainment and advanced services all supported by
outstanding customer service to inner city urban communities
and public housing authority communities. As one of the last
remaining African-American owned cable and
telecommunications companies, Wilco has always reached
beyond cable’s traditional residential customer base to
provide custom cable service to education, government, and
low income communities. In 2001, Wilco became the first
sole and exclusive provider of cable television services for
the Philadelphia Housing Authority (“PHA”). In 2003, Wilco
created its solely owned and operated community
entertainment cable channel specifically for PHA residents.
In 2006, Wilco upgraded its cable system to offer digital
cable service and became the first cable provider to offer
digital cable services at low and affordable prices for PHA
residents. The company provides these services across an
upgraded coaxial cable network that reaches across 90%
of its footprint.
Overall, the Company believes that a solid relationship with
customers and the larger community is critical to its
long-term success. Through its public affairs initiatives,
Wilco has always committed its experience and its resources
to enhancing the lives of the residents in the communities
it serves. The company’s reputation for solid operating
performance, innovation, personalized customer service and
strong relationships with both customers and community
leaders remains widely acknowledged.
We are proud to serve our residents and be apart of this
unique community. We look forward to an exciting and bright
future! |
